Jeff Winter and Janis Fine—known as “Jeff and Janis” — bring a lively and engaging  interpretation to traditional and contemporary songs.

We are a Chicago based musical duo who perform at many functions including group and organizational events, festivals, special family occasions, fund raisers, educational programs for adult learning, and many other events. We have appeared on WFMT’s Folkstage, Chicago City Winery, and other venues near and far.

Using acoustic instruments and vocal harmonies, we present a cabaret style show including background about the music, humor, and carefully selected music for each occasion.

Here’s our story…

A boy from Milwaukee discovers a love for popular and Jewish music, enters the field of  Jewish education—and later becomes a professor of education at a university in Chicago.

While a girl from the south side of Chicago is enamored with American musical theater and Jewish music—and becomes a professor of education at a university in Chicago.
For both, performing Jewish music was placed somewhat on the back burner. That is, until a funny thing happened on the way to a Hillel event.

Chicago was unique in having a citywide Hillel program for college faculty. A talent night became the venue for moving that love for performing Jewish music straight to the front burner!
Introduced by Patti Ray, Chair of the citywide Hillel group in 1999, as “two singing profs who must meet”, Jeff and Janis the musical duo was born.

Since that time we have combined our love for Jewish and  American popular music to create a repertoire that includes standards, folk, popular music and more. We sing in English, Italian, Yiddish, Hebrew and sometimes some Russian as well. Since 2000 we have performed over 700 shows and still counting!
